Unconscious man found near roadway; struggles when deputy attempts to arrest

39-year-old Peter Elrod was charged with public intoxication and resisting arrest after a deputy found him unconscious near a roadway and he refused to get up.

On November 6th, Stewart County Sheriff’s Sergeant Ryan Goldsmith spotted an unconscious man near the street at the intersection of Bumpus Mills Road and Highway 120. The sergeant reported he made contact with a person he recognized as Peter Elrod. He noted Elrod had bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, and an odor of alcohol emanating from his breath.

Sergeant Goldsmith stated in the affidavit that he asked Peter Elrod to stand up several times, but Elrod refused. He then told Elrod he was being placed under arrest, but stated Elrod resisted his attempts of being handcuffed. The sergeant affirmed there was a minor struggle, but he managed to detain him and transport him to the Stewart County Sheriff’s Office.

Peter Elrod was arrested and charged with public intoxication and resisting arrest. He was later released on a $750 bond.
